Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Engl 0000328

Dearest Sacred Heart, when I kneel in front of You and think of You, I would like to stay close to You and be able to console You just by my silent presence… But now the world enters my heart with its infernal procession, the imagination goes adrift, my thoughts go crazy and I suddenly find myself so far from You. Yet You remain there and You fight against this world, against my passions, against my weakness and against satan in me; as long as I do not consent to all these temptations, You make me victorious; as long as I do not deliver the will of my heart by willful mortal sin, You do not leave me… then on this day of YOUR SACRED HEART, I want to enter into it, I want to live in it, I want to make my home in Your Heart as You settled in my soul on the day of my baptism;

Let us live together, dear Sacred Heart of my heart; May Your boundless, spacious, powerful and peaceful Heart expand in mine to nourish me with Your Precious Blood, with Your desires, with Your thoughts and with Your love… finally, my Beloved Jesus, if I should fail or fall, may it always be through Mary that I can come back to You.

Holy feast to You Most Sacred Heart of Jesus!

Account of the apparitions

Also find the three main accounts of the most important apparitions of the Sacred Heart to Saint Marguerite Marie Alacoque on the Marian Calendar

First part

On December 27th, 1673, at the convent of the Visitation in Paray-le-Monial, France, Sister Margaret Mary was in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Alone with her Saviour hidden under the veils of the Holy Eucharist, she conversed with Him in a silent prayer. Our Lord will repeat for her the episode of Holy Thursday, and “He made me rest for a long time on His divine breast, where He revealed to me the marvels of His Love and the inexplicable secrets of His Sacred Heart.”

He first showed her the Sacred Heart in a throne of flames, more radiant than the sun, bearing the wound opened by the soldier’s lance, surrounded by thorns and crowned with the Cross.

”My divine Heart is so passionate with love for mankind and for you in particular that, unable to contain within itself the flames of its ardent charity, it must spread them through you.”

Then Christ took Sister Margaret Mary’s heart, plunged it into His own and placed it again, transformed and luminous, in the saint’s chest. After this mystical favour, the young sister remained for several days “as if ablaze and intoxicated” and above all filled with an immense fullness of God.

Second part

The second apparition took place in 1674, on the first Friday of the month. Jesus presented Himself to the saint, “all radiant with glory, with His five wounds shining like five suns… But above all, His chest resembled a furnace… He revealed to me His all-loving and all-loving Heart, which was the living source of these flames”. Christ then complains about the coldness and rebuff of men towards Him “for all my readiness to do them good”. And He begged the young sister:

”You, at least, give me the pleasure of making up for their ingratitude as far as you are able. ”

He then asked her to receive frequent communion, especially on the first Fridays of the month, and also to practice the “Holy Hour” every Thursday, from eleven o’clock to midnight, joining in his agony in the Garden of Olives, in order to pray, suffer and ask forgiveness for the sins of the world. Concerning communion on the first Fridays of the month, Our Lord later made this promise:

”I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that Its all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on nine first Fridays of consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they will not die under My displeasure or without receiving their sacraments, My divine Heart making Itself their assured refuge at the last moment.”

Third part

The third great apparition took place in 1675, whilst she was one day in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament; our Lord appeared to her, and pointing to His heart which He showed to her, surrounded with flames, surmounted by the cross, encircled with a crown of thorns, and pierced with a gaping wound, He said to her:

“Behold this heart, which has loved mankind so much, and which receives only ingratitude and coldness in return for its love. My desire is that you should make reparation to my heart for this ingratitude, and induce others also to make reparation.”

Our Lord then asks for a special feast of His Heart, including an act of “reparation of honour” to compensate for all the outrages He received in the Holy Eucharist.

To convince ourselves of the need to be apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us listen to this vibrant appeal from S. Margaret Mary: “The adorable Heart of Jesus wants to establish His reign of love in all hearts, to destroy and ruin that of Satan.(L.118) This is the last effort of his love to favour men, in these last centuries, with his loving redemption (L.133).”

Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before Thee, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which Thy loving Heart is everywhere subject.
Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask Thy pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those, who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow Thee, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of Thy law.

We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against Thee;

  1. we are determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior,
  2. for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent,
  3. for the frequent violations of Sundays and holydays,
  4. and the shocking blasphemies uttered against Thee and Thy Saints.
  5. We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Thy Vicar on earth and Thy priests are subjected;
  6. for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege of the very Sacrament of Thy Divine Love;
  7. and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which Thou hast founded.

Would, O Divine Jesus, that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of Thy divine honor, the satisfaction Thou didst once make to Thine Eternal Father on the cross and which Thou continuest to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of Thy Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth;

and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of Thy grace, for all neglect of Thy great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past. Henceforth, we will live a life of unwavering faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity.

We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending Thee and to bring as many as possible to follow Thee.

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to Thee, so that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Ghost Thou livest and reignest, God, world without end. Amen.
