The Sacramentals

The Sacramentals

When you ask to bless a miraculous medal, a statue or any other religious object, or make a sign of the cross with holy water, or use the Rosary, the scapular or the Miraculous Medal you are dealing with a sacramental. But do you really know what a sacramental is?

Sacramentals are sacred signs by which spiritual effects are signified and obtained, at the prayer of the Church. The purpose of sacramentals is to dispose the soul to receive the grace provided by the sacraments, either by removing an obstacle such as the devil or temptations, or by the remission of venial sins, or by disposing the faithful to perform and receive the sacraments.

Two types of sacramentals are thus distinguished:

  1. sacramentals related to the reception of a sacrament: example: the penance that the confessor gives us
  2. sacramentals related to the sanctification of the Christian life: example: praying the rosary, putting on the Miraculous Medal and the Scapular.

Here are the three main sacramentals relating to the Christian life of the knight (on the way to be built)
