Description
The scapular – the protective cloak of Mary
‘The Blessed Virgin promises the bearers of the scapular the attainment of eternal life. This is the most important grace of all’ (Pope Pius XII). The scapular goes back to a promise of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which she entrusted to St Simon Stock when she appeared to him with a scapular on 16 July 1251. This is what we are promised if we wear the scapular faithfully: Mary protects us in danger; Mary promises us salvation; Mary comes to our aid in purgatory. The Catholic Church has recognised this gift of Mary and elevated it to a sacramental for all believers. Heaven has confirmed it time and again through miracles of conversion and protection in times of great need for body and soul.
